International Women in Engineering Day is celebrated each year on June 23, encouraging girls and young women to explore careers in engineering. This year’s theme, “Together We Engineer,” highlights the power of collaboration. To mark the occasion, the Engineers Australia – Cairns Committee hosted a coffee morning on Friday, 13 June 2025.

Christina joined an inspiring panel of women engineers: Alice Fleetwood, Lauren Spann, and event organiser Nastassja Regan.

The panel shared candid reflections on their career journeys, discussing the rewards and challenges of being women in engineering, balancing multiple roles while continuing to excel in their fields. With expertise spanning electrical, hydraulic, mechanical, and fire engineering, the discussion showcased a rich diversity of perspectives.

The conversation was open, insightful, honest and collaborative. The panelists explored leadership approaches, lessons from real-world projects, and offered practical tips on navigating both career and life as an engineer.

A few key takeaways:

  • Communication is crucial—from a simple “good morning” to clarifying a client’s true needs.

  • Celebrating success matters, and recognising achievements helps foster strong teams.

  • Working in regional areas offers unique advantages—close-knit offices, project variety, and constant learning.

  • Engineering follows you home—whether it’s conserving energy and water or fire safety awareness.
