Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

Note this is a guide only and you must check with your state regulator/board/authority for current requirements.

Informal CPD activities generally include

  • self-directed private study
  • web-based informal learning
  • research
  • reading that relates to your profession.

Typically one point equals one hour of activity.

Architects

Minimum CPD requirements for architects are 20 hrs per year.

This includes up to 10 hours of informal CPD.

The CPD cycle for most states follows the financial year, except QLD and Tas, who’s CPD cycle is 1 April-31 March.

Lawyers

Minimum CPD requirements for lawyers are 10 units per year.

This includes up to 5 units of private study.

The CPD cycle is 1 April to 31 March in all states except Tas, who’s CPD cycle is 1 May – 30 April. The Law Council of Australia

  • 50 hours must relate to your area of engineering practice
  • 10 hours must relate to risk management
  • 15 hours must relate to business and management skills
  • the remainder must cover a range of activities relevant to your engineering career.

There are different types of activities e.g.

  • Type II – Short courses, webinars, workshops, seminars, discussion groups and conferences – No maximum hours.
  • Type IV – Private study e.g. reading, podcasts. – Maximum 18 hours

NSW – Building Commission NSW 50 hrs/year There are different pathways.

Up to 30 hours of Informal CPD / year

Activities under 30 minutes may not be counted. CPD hours are then to be calculated in increments of 0.5 hours, the actual time spent must be rounded down to the nearest 30 minutes.

A Registered Professional Engineer’s CPD year is 12 months commencing on their date of registration and the anniversary of that date each year.
QLD – Board of Professional Engineers Queensland – BPEQ 150 hrs/3 yrs Private study which extends knowledge and skills – A maximum of 18 hours of your total CPD may be claimed

Short courses, workshops, seminars and discussion groups, conferences, technical inspections and technical meetings – No limit

Building Certifiers / Building Surveyors

Mandatory CPD frameworks exist for building practitioners; points/hours vary by class and registration board.

NSW – Building Commission NSW 25 points/ year Private study and research. Activities that fall within this category earn 1 point per hour spent undertaking the activity, up to a maximum of 10 points each year.

The smallest fraction of a CPD point that can be claimed is ½ CPD point for 30 minutes of an activity.

A registered certifier’s CPD year is 12 months commencing on their date of registration and the anniversary of that date each year.
QLD – Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) CPD depending on the type of licence and accreditation.

Each year a pool safety inspector must accrue:

  • 6 points—for most licensees
  • 4 points —for building certifiers.
Structured training often required for registration classes.

1 point = 1 hour of participation in an approved educational activity.

The 12 months up leading up to licence renewal date.
